Humber-wide Festival – Herbert Howells – Closing Concert: The Lydian Choir

November 12, 2017 @ 19:30
All Saints Church

Closing Concert: The Lydian Choir conducted by Susan Hollingworth, Elizabeth Webster (Piano), Lyndsey Chamber Orchestra conducted by Steve Fareham.

Herbert Howells (l892-l983) is chiefly known as a composer of choral music. In addition to his acknowledged masterpiece, Hymn us Paradisi, he wrote 20 settings of the Evening Service for many of England’s finest cathedrals. Less well-known are his beautifully crafted compositions in other genres: his brilliant chamber works – many of which were written before the age of 25, works for orchestra and strings and over fifty songs for voice and piano. A student at the Royal College of Music (Stanford described him as “my son in music”), he went on to teach composition there for 60 years.

With the help of talented local and regionally based musicians, our festival aims to celebrate his musical legacy. We are especially delighted to welcome renowned Howellsian, Paul Spicer, to lead our choral workshop day at Beverley Minster.
